When I was first starting out as a photographer (and long before I came to the Outer Banks) could never have realized just how important communication is. As I photograph, I try to make sure my directions are as simple and natural as possible. This goes double for anything I do on the beach, and triple for anything I do with kids. I try to keep it as simple as "hey, can you look over your shoulder and give me a bit of a smile?" or in this case it was... "Alright everyone hold hands and let's walk down the boardwalk together!" then at that opportune moment, quietly calling one of the boys' names and photographing them when he looks back. This is one of my favorite photos because it reminds me of just how much I have grown over the years. I love what I do!
