Relax before and during your photo shoot. Heck, have a drink!:
Every once in a while, I’ll have a client who will meet me at the front door of their rental house and give me a piteous look. As a 16 year veteran of photo shoots, I already know the volumes a look like that says and the overarching theme is “You poor, poor man. Do you know what you have gotten yourself into?” The simple answer is “yes.”
I’m pleased to say I have SEVERAL recommendations for you!
A) With all seriousness, the hardest part of the family photo shoot takes place before I ever arrive. Take your time, and give everyone enough notice so they can move at their own pace. If you already know that it’ll take your sister 3 hours to get ready, make sure she starts 3 hours (and 30 minutes) early. That way, when I arrive, everyone is ready and relaxed because they have been sitting on the shady back porch for the last 30 minutes (see #5).
B) With that being said, if you or the members of your family enjoy having a drink, do it! I have found that a drink allows some folks to relax and take the edge off being photographed; especially if they are self-conscience about getting in front of the camera. Heck, bring a cooler, pack some snacks for the kids, and if there’s anything left over at the end have a picnic!
C) Bring some tunes! If you have one of those portable speakers, bring it. Also, pick some neutral music that everyone might enjoy!
D) Lastly, trust me when I say, your kids will act just fine. As long as they don’t run into the ocean, we should golden.
